LI-COR Biosciences Offers $1.75 Million in Matching Funds for Undergraduate Genomics Education
September 23, 2008: LI-COR® Biosciences announces an enhanced matching funds program to support undergraduate hands-on education in genomics. $1.75 million in matching funds is available with LI-COR providing 60% of the funding to each qualifying institution. The Genomics Education Matching Funds (GEMF) program now features a streamlined application process to help colleges acquire LI-COR DNA sequencing systems for use by undergraduate students studying molecular biology and related fields.
“Students who have the hands-on experience using the LI-COR system have a distinct advantage when they seek jobs and admission to post-graduate programs,” says Jackie Potts, LI-COR GEMF coordinator. “GEMF-partner schools tell us that integrating the 4300 provides a competitive advantage for students and their department, noting that work on the sequencer allows students to be knowledge producers not just knowledge consumers.”
More than 200 undergraduate programs are currently benefiting from the GEMF program.
LI-COR genomic analysis systems are used in academic labs worldwide for a variety of research applications including sequencing, microsatellites, AFLP®, SNP discovery and reverse genetics research.

LI-COR® Biosciences
Genomics Education Matching Fund Program
As part of LI-COR’s ongoing commitment to support undergraduate hands-on education in genomic, matching funds from LI-COR will provide 60% of the funding to each qualifying institution. In addition, the GEMF program now features a streamlined on-line application process. Deadline for grant reviews is November 7, 2008.
Applying for the matching funds is a quick and simple procedure taking approximately 15 minutes. Submission is electronic via an on-line submission form and the following information will be requested.
• Institution name
• Submitting instructor
• Address / City / State / Zip
• Phone / e-mail address
• Total number of students attending the institution
• Number of science majors attending the college or high school
• Number of courses that will use the system in class coursework
• Anticipated number of students participating in course(s) each year
• Course name(s) and course descriptions that will use the system as part of curriculum. Include one or more examples of how you will incorporate the 4300 DNA Analyzer into each course.
• A brief description of how the system will enhance the department’s curriculum

Rules for the matching grants:
1) Entries are limited to educational institutions in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada.
2) Instrument must be used in conjunction with an undergraduate curriculum. System may be used for secondary research.
3) Awarding of grants is at the sole discretion of LI-COR, Inc.
4) Grant is non-transferable. Grant must be used to purchase a new system from LI-COR Biosciences. Actual grant amount is based upon the instrument package purchased by the qualifying institution. The LI-COR grant will be applied as a credit directly to the purchase order.
5) Costs of operation including, but not limited to, reagents, consumables, and additional training, is the responsibility of the award recipient.
6) Schools which have already received a GEMF award in previous rounds will require justification of the need for a second unit, and will only be awarded on an exceptional basis.
7) Grant recipient agrees to write a follow-up report within 18 months of system installation (minimum of three pages) describing how the system is being used and the benefits of the system in their educational program. LI-COR reserves the right to use fund recipient’s name and follow-up reports in press releases and promotions of the GEMF program.
8) Grants must be submitted by November 7, 2008. (Awards will be announced by November 21, 2008.) Purchase orders from grant recipients must be received by March 20, 2009.
9) Items in package are as specified. LI-COR is unable to make substitutions and/or exchanges.
10) Eligible instrument package and grant amount available:
• Package Includes: 4300L and Sequencing, Microsatellite, and AFLP® Application Package
• Information about this package: This package is ideal for sequencing single stranded, double stranded, or PCR product DNA. Labeled infrared primers are the primary chemistry, with infrared terminators available for special situations (e.g. single pass sequencing of a particular region).
In addition, it also provides capabilities for microsatellite genotyping of diploid organisms. Microsatellites are commonly used for biodiversity, forensic, mapping, and association analysis research. Microsatellite analysis requires knowledge of microsatellite regions for the target organism.
It also provides capabilities for AFLP® genotyping of diploid and/or polyploid organisms. AFLP® analysis is commonly used for biodiversity or mapping research. AFLP® analysis does not require knowledge of genomic sequence of the target organism.
• Price: Contact LI-COR for pricing.
11) Package includes instrument, accessories, training and software packages.
Contact LI-COR for complete details.
12) Each package includes the standard LI-COR one-year on-site warranty.
13) Purchase price includes on-site installation and basic training on instrument operation and sequencing chemistry and software for up to four faculty members. Secondary application training (AFLP® and/or Microsatellites) takes place at regularly scheduled intervals at LI-COR Biosciences in Lincoln, Nebraska. The associated travel costs for secondary training are the responsibility of the awarded institution. There is a two year window for completing the secondary training.
